...and then there was light.
Conducted by Eivind Aadland, featuring soprano Samantha Clarke, tenor Michael Petruccelli, baritone Morgan Pearse and TSO Chorus.
Biblical in both its proportions and its inspiration.
Joseph Haydn’s epic oratorio Die Schöpfung (The Creation) tackles no less a theme than the creation of the universe. Taking its inspiration from the Book of Genesis, the Psalms and Milton’s Paradise Lost, Die Schöpfung offers one vivid set piece after another – the representation of chaos, the coming of light, the separation of earth and water, and the brilliance of the firmament. Using the full resources of orchestra, chorus and vocal soloists, Haydn brings his unbounded musical imagination to the grandest of all subjects.
Composed to a German text and subsequently translated into English, Die Schöpfung is authentic in both versions. It is heard in this performance in its original German.
Sung in German with English surtitles.
